Abstract

What if the greatest role of your life is playing your true self? Ida Burton used to be Hollywood’s sweetheart until the best roles started drying up in her forties. When Ida lands one of the leads in a big-budget lesbian rom-com, it's not only a chance at reviving her dwindling career. Maybe this movie can be an opportunity to finally burst out of the closet she's forced herself into. Faye Fleming has been at the top of her acting game and collecting awards for the past few years. When she's cast in a huge blockbuster opposite the legendary Ida Burton, she's over the moon. Ida and Faye hit it off. The chemistry on set is through the roof… until their characters' first kiss.

Abstract

Abstract

Here, Jenny Bjorklund reveals that Swedish literary discourses on lesbianism provocatively contrast with a widely accepted view that attitudes toward homosexuality have gradually become more tolerant. This study traces literary discourse on lesbianism in Sweden from 1930 to 2005 by analyzing lesbian-themed literature and investigating the ways that it confirms and/or challenges socio-political discourses on lesbianism during this time period. Ultimately, the lasting power of negative discourses upends the assumption that Sweden's progressive laws reflect progressive attitudes toward homosexuality.

Abstract

"Between Banat presents a feminist and queer of color analysis of homoeroticism and nonnormative sexualities between Arab women as represented in transnational Arab literature, art, and film. It draws on a dynamic archive of Arabic and Anglophone film and literature, as well as works in translation and transliteration to outline dominant discourses which make representing queer Arab subjects difficult. Between Banat establishes queer Arab critique as a strategy to read around limiting discourses and proposes tenets to make possible queer Arab futures. Mejdulene Bernard Shomali demonstrates how systems of heteropatriarchy, Arab nationalisms, and Orientalism work in relation to mire queer Arab women's horizons and uses queer Arab critique to locate queer desire amidst heteronormative imperatives"--

Abstract

"The Cambridge Companion to Lesbian Literature examines literary representations of lesbian sexuality, identities, and communities, from the medieval period to the present. In addition to providing a helpful orientation to key literary-historical periods, critical concepts, theoretical debates and literary genres, this Companion considers the work of such well-known authors as Virginia Woolf, Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde, Alison Bechdel and Sarah Waters. Written by a host of leading critics and covering subjects as diverse as lesbian desire in the long eighteenth century and same-sex love in a postcolonial context, this Companion delivers insight into the variety of traditions that have shaped the present landscape of lesbian literature." --
